It Started With Magic

In 1893, a reporter from the Akron Beacon Journal came to visit Barberton, a city that had barely existed two years before. He found factories, neighborhoods, a downtown, and a beautiful lake sitting at the center of it all like the city had been planned around it for decades. He went back and wrote that the whole thing had appeared “like magic”. Decades later, that wasn't just a compliment, it became the city's nickname: The Magic City. 

O.C. Barber wasn't just a businessman, he was an industrialist. When he founded Barberton in 1891, he didn't just stumble into it, he had a blueprint. His goal was to situate the city along the railroad lines and the Ohio Canal, bring in factories, and fill the neighborhoods with working families. Barber wanted to create something special from scratch that had never existed before. And at the very center of it all, he placed a lake. He named it Lake Anna after his daughter, Anna Laura. The city didn't grow slowly. Within a year, major manufacturers were already running. Within a decade, Barberton was one of Ohio's most productive industrial cities. 

The Grit Runs Deep

Like a lot of great American cities, Barberton took some hard hits in the second half of the 20th century. The factories started going quiet. The jobs that had meant everything to families began to disappear. Barberton found itself caught in the same dreadful wave sweeping through the Midwest, a community trying to survive while the country kept shifting.

But Barberton didn't fold. The Barberton Community Development Corporation got to work, and the results were real: thousands of new jobs, more than $100 million in business expansion, and a downtown that had life again. Old buildings filled back up and had found new purpose. 

And that says a lot about the people who call this place home. They've seen Barberton at its best and worst. And they chose it anyway, staying when things got was hard. 

Lake Anna Is Still the Heart

If you walk through Barberton today, you’ll find Lake Anna right where O.C. Barber intended it to be, tucked into the very heart of the town. It’s surrounded by a lively community park. But for those who grew up in this city, Lake Anna is more than a landmark. 

The lake is practically the hub for everything else downtown. You’ve got little local shops, coffee spots, and restaurants surrounding it. Then there’s Lake 8, the theater that’s been a town favorite since 1938. This downtown area is where the whole town seems to gather.
