People in the Cleveland area have a lot of wonderful suburbs to choose from when they’re looking to put down roots, and Rocky River stands out as one of the best options. For some locals, there’s plenty of intense and playful debate about which is superior, the east or west side of Cleveland, and Rocky River definitely helps make the case for those arguing for the west side.

With the city’s myriad shops and eateries, diverse greenspaces, and the many ways it’s been recognized regionally and locally, Rocky River is a place people love to call home.

Premium Shopping, Dining, and More

Both residents and visitors alike appreciate how much Rocky River has to offer for meals, activities, and shopping. One of its majorly trafficked areas, Center Ridge Road, spans both Rocky River and its adjoining neighbor Fairview Park, ad features a wide array of businesses to fulfill any need.

Here, you’ll find numerous outdoor shopping centers, several grocery stores, chain and local restaurants serving virtually every type of cuisine, and major retailers like Target, OfficeMax, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, and much more. There’s also an AMC theater for film lovers.

In other areas of the city, you’ll find beloved homegrown bars and restaurants like Char Whiskey Bar, Westsiders, King Wah, the Rocky River Wine Bar, Gormley’s Pub, Mitchell’s Ice Cream and much more. The Old River Shopping Area is also a charming part of town, featuring boutiques, specialty shops, and eateries in a historic neighborhood. The Cowan Pottery Museum located in the Rocky River library is also a favorite of locals, featuring pieces from a renowned pottery artisan.

As Rocky River Mayor Pam Bobst has said, “It’s really become a destination because of the unique shops that we have. There’s been a lot of investment in really neat, unique, one-of-a-kind shops. And then, of course, you complement that with all these incredible restaurants serving diverse food, and there’s kind of something for everyone.”

Walkability, Proximity to Other Communities, and Public Parks

Numerous areas throughout Rocky River are extremely walkable, including many of the areas indicated above. Plus, it’s near so many other major suburbs and hotspots. As one Reddit user put it, “It’s a great place to live! I am there very often… we’re in far west Lakewood. You’ll be so close to Lakewood, Westlake, Avon, and downtown Cleveland. We absolutely love this area. Tonnnns of parks, playgrounds, family-friendly restaurants, on and on.”

Another Redditor commented, “Something I particularly like about Rocky River is proximity to other communities with their own walkable town centers. Makes for a variety of things to do without driving all over the large metro. Getting into Cleveland is fairly easy also.” Meanwhile, one resident playfully summed things up with: “Rocky River = 17 minutes to airport, 17 minutes to downtown, 7 minutes to Lake Erie. What’s not to like but the taxes?!” 

Along with this, residents of Rocky River are said to have an average commute of 22 minutes, which isn’t too shabby for a major metropolitan area. And, of course, there are also the many parks and greenspaces to take into account, with Rocky River boasting ten public parks along with the Rocky River Reservation, a prominent part of the famed Cleveland Metroparks.
